ITS India Forum

Overview of ITS India Forum

The ITS India Forum is at the forefront of India’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) advancement, driving innovative solutions to enhance the country’s transportation landscape. Through collaborations with top-tier research institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and partnerships with industry leaders, ITS India Forum fosters a supportive environment for technology-driven transformations in mobility and infrastructure. As India addresses critical challenges in traffic management, sustainability, and safety, ITS India Forum plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of ITS in the nation.

Invitation for Pilot Project Collaborations

ITS India Forum is now inviting industry leaders passionate about ITS to participate in groundbreaking pilot projects that will serve as a model for large-scale implementation across India. This collaborative approach includes research-backed project design, stakeholder involvement, and strategic support from government agencies, culminating in comprehensive project trials and scaling initiatives.

Structure and Process for Pilot Projects

  1. Research Foundation:
Before launching any pilot project, ITS India Forum partners with leading research institutions, such as IITs, to conduct in-depth research. This foundational phase provides insights into the feasibility, scalability, and potential impact of the project, ensuring it aligns with the unique transportation needs of India.
  2. Pilot Project Design and Trials:
Based on the research findings, a comprehensive pilot project blueprint is developed. ITS India Forum collaborates closely with industry stakeholders to structure trials that are robust, goal-oriented, and data-driven. Every trial phase is designed with precision to ensure that results are measurable, allowing for detailed analysis post-implementation.
  3. Funding and Stakeholder Collaboration:
Once the pilot design is finalized, funding is approved to support implementation by all involved stakeholders, including government bodies, research institutions, and industry partners. This collaborative funding model not only mobilizes resources but also ensures shared accountability among participants.
  4. Implementation and Field Trials:
The pilot project is executed with ongoing assessments and field data collection. Industry leaders play a key role in implementing these projects, ensuring they reflect real-world conditions and provide valuable insights for broader application.
  5. Results Presentation and Government Scaling:
Upon completion, the outcomes of the pilot projects are analyzed and presented to the Government of India. With government endorsement and intervention, successful pilots are scaled up, paving the way for broader adoption and nationwide impact.

Ongoing Key Pilot Projects of ITS India Forum with Industry Partners

1.      CV2X Green Corridor Project

The CV2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) green corridor pilot project, conducted by ITS India Forum in collaboration with industry giants Acridis and Danlaw and with government agency CDAC, stands as a notable example. This pilot showcased the potential for advanced communication networks in vehicle systems to enhance traffic management, road safety, and environmental efficiency. It set a precedent for using CV2X technology as a viable ITS solution for India’s traffic challenges.

After the completion of the pilot a presentation was made to the ministry of telecommunication. Study report will be submitted to the government of Karnataka, Government of India – Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Health, Ministry of telecommunication, Ministry of Electronics (MeitY) and NITI Aayog.

ITS India Forum also plans to conduct CV2X pilots in Delhi, Hyderabad, Patna, and few other states.

  1. Safe Driving Score Pilot (for drivers, to improve road safety)

The Safe Driving Score (SDS) pilot aims to enhance road safety by evaluating and improving driver behavior using advanced telematics, ADAS, and connected systems. SDS provides a measurable score based on factors like speeding, acceleration, braking, cornering, distraction, and adherence to traffic signals. The initiative uses this score to offer incentives such as insurance discounts and fleet management benefits, motivating drivers to adopt safer habits. Supported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), SDS is expected to significantly reduce accidents and improve driving behavior across India.

Upcoming Pilot Projects of ITS India Forum –

  1. LiDAR and AI Technology: A significant pilot project has been implemented that integrates LiDAR with AI technology for enhanced geospatial analysis. This project involves the use of airborne LiDAR systems that collect high-resolution data about the environment. AI algorithms are employed to automate the detection and classification of objects within the LiDAR data, such as road signs, vehicles, and even pedestrians. This capability not only speeds up data processing but also improves accuracy in traffic monitoring and urban planning applications. As LiDAR technology continues to evolve, its integration with AI offers exciting prospects for intelligent transportation systems, particularly in traffic management and safety applications.
  1. Digital Twin Project: A notable digital twin pilot project is being undertaken by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). This project focuses on creating a digital representation of urban environments to enhance urban planning and management. The aim is to leverage real-time data to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and optimize infrastructure maintenance. By simulating various scenarios, stakeholders can visualize impacts and make data-driven decisions that align with sustainable development goals.
  1. Any other project as per the suggestion of the board.

Collaborating on such projects would lead to great benefits coming from ITS India Forum’s expertise in intelligent transportation systems.
